ICC GLOBAL Scholars:
*Joana Filipa Cardoso Lopes de Almeida holds a 5-year degree in Portuguese and English for educational purposes, awarded by the University of Aveiro (UA) in 2006. In her early career she taught English as a Foreign Language at a private language institute in Portugal. From 2007-2009 she worked as a research assistant in a meta-analysis project in Language Didactics in Portugal, coordinated by Maria Helena Araújo e Sá and Isabel Alarcão in the Department of Education, at UA. Passionate about the challenges of research activity and its social impact on society, she began a PhD in 2010, in the same department, under the sponsorship of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. Being a former Erasmus student at the University of Southampton, UK, in 2003/2004, Joana’s PhD lays in the intersection of student mobility and Intercultural Education and aims at fostering the intercultural competence of exchange students while abroad. Entitled “Student mobility and Intercultural Education: the network Campus Europae at the University of Aveiro”, this project is supervised by Ana Raquel Simões and Nilza Costa. Member of the Open Laboratory for foreign Language Learning (LALE) of the Research Centre “Didactics and Technology in Education for Trainers” (CIDTFF), Joana is also an alumni member of the Erasmus student network (ESN) in Aveiro and has been responsible for several activities aimed at facilitating the integration of incoming students at UA in the wider Portuguese community.
* Iryna Dzhuryak holds a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with specialization in International and Intercultural Education from Florida International University. She is currently working as a Departmental Reports Manager at the Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York. Iryna is overseeing contractual and ad-hoc reporting for student exchange programs, ensuring data integrity and reporting quality. Most recently, Iryna was interning with IIE’s Research and Evaluation Division assisting with international academic mobility projects Atlas and Open Doors. Prior to joining IIE, Iryna Dzhuryak was employed at Florida International University as a graduate assistant, working as an external evaluator of a state-sponsored mentoring program for “at-risk” youth, instructor of undergraduate teacher preparation courses, research assistant and coordinator of sponsored special education grant programs. Her experience abroad includes working as an assistant professor of English for two years at the Institute of Management and Economics in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine.
* Mattia Baiutti is (Postdoctoral) Research Fellow (funded by Fondazione Intercultura)- University of Udine (IT); Ph.D. (Doctor Europæus) in Humanistic Studies (Educational Sciences) – University of Rome “Tor Vergata” (IT); visiting Ph.D Researcher student at the School of Education, Durham University (UK). Mattia graduated in Social Education (BA, University of Udine – IT) and Philosophy (MA, University of Trieste – IT). His research focuses on the assessment of secondary school students’ intercultural competence after a long-term program abroad.

Darla K. Deardorff – ICC Global Founder
Founded by Dr. Darla Deardorff of Duke University in 2011, ICC Global grew out of her research and work, particularly in conceiving and editing The Sage Handbook of Intercultural Competence (Sage, 2009). In addition to founding ICC Global, Darla K. Deardorff is a Research Fellow at Duke University and holds affiliated faculty positions at several universities around the world including Nelson Mandela University in South Africa, Shanghai International Studies University in China, at Meiji University, and and is on faculty of the prestigious Summer Institute of Intercultural Communication in Portland, Oregon. She has also been on the faculty of Harvard University’s Future of Learning Institute and Harvard University’s Global Education Think Tank as well as at North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and Middlebury Institute for International Studies. She is also currently executive director of the Association of International Education Administrators, a national professional organization based in Durham North Carolina. She receives numerous invitations from around the world to speak on her research and work on intercultural competence and assessment (including in Europe, Latin America, Australia, Africa, Middle East, and Asia) and is a noted expert on these topics. Darla has published widely on topics in international education and intercultural learning/assessment, including 8 books and over 50 articles and book chapters. Publications include “The SAGE Handbook of Intercultural Competence” (Sage, 2009), author of ” Beneath the Tip of the Iceberg” (2011, University of Michigan Press) as well as co-editor of “The SAGE Handbook of International Higher Education” (Sage, 2012), ” Building Cultural Competence” (Stylus, 2012) “Demystifying Outcomes Assessment for International Educators (Stylus, 2015) and “Intercultural Competence in Higher Education” (Routledge, 2017).
Darla has worked in the international education field for over 20 years and previously held positions at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill where she has had experience in study abroad, international student services, cultural programming, and ESL teaching/teacher training. She is also an ESL instructor and teacher trainer with over twelve years of experience and has lived, taught and worked in Germany, Japan, and Switzerland. An educator for Duke Corporate Education, Darla is an experienced cross-cultural trainer and coach and conducts training for non-profits, corporations and educational institutions. She is a consultant for numerous universities and organizations around the world on topics related to intercultural competence development and assessment, as well as global leadership, international education trends, internationalizing the curriculum, and other related topics. One of her recent consultant projects was for UNESCO on comparative perspectives on intercultural competence which resulted in an invitation to speak at the first UN World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue, held in Baku, Azerbaijan in April 2011 and 2013, as well as UNESCO publications in 2013 and 2018 and a forthcoming UNESCO publication in 2019.
Darla holds a master’s and doctorate from North Carolina State University where she focused on international education. Her dissertation, focused on the definition and assessment of intercultural competence, has drawn national and international attention and her intercultural competence models developed through the research are being used worldwide by such organizations as the Bertelsmann Foundation in Germany, Cariplo Foundation in Italy, and Sodexo. She is a certified administrator/trainer of the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), Intercultural Edge (ICE) , Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES), and of the Global Competencies Inventory (GCI). Her research interests include non-western perspectives on intercultural competence, internationalization of teacher education, and intercultural competence assessment.
