Zoom talk: Education for Intercultural and Democratic Citizenship
Talk by professor emeritus Michael Byram (Durham University) in the Digital series of talks on plurilingualism and interculturality.
My purpose in this lecture is to introduce and analyse the concept of ‘intercultural and democratic citizenship’ and the competences which are inherent in it. I will do so by referring to the Council of Europe’s Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture, and then by considering the role (foreign) language teaching can take both separately and in cooperation with other subjects/disciplines. This will be illustrated by examples of projects taken from From Principles to Practice in Education for Intercultural Citizenship (Byram et al 2017) and Intercultural Citizenship across the Curriculum (Wagner et al 2019).
Please register for the talk here (you will register for the whole series but are not obliged to attend all talks).
